This project aims to engage children and young people in participative projects relating to the design and development stages of the Playbuilder Project.
Playbuilder is a government funded programme to improve children’s play nationally. Over the next two years, 22 play areas across Bournemouth are set to share a £1.1 million investment boost as part of the Playbuilder programme (managed by Play England). Bournemouth Borough Council will be adding a further £0.5m to this.
The project is building on historical consultations and working up to participation projects to engage children and young people in the design phase of the project on various sites which have been scheduled to provide adequate time to complete meaningful work.
The Childrens and Families Services Participation Team, Leisure Services landscape architect/designer, Children’s Outreach Team, Detached Youthwork team, Community Parks workers and Barnardos Play Rangers will be working on site with children and young people initially to bring their views, concepts and desires into the design of play spaces. This will be followed up with a feedback session (the following week where practicable) where their designs, having been worked up to sketch drawings, will be discussed and reviewed. Following this the sketch drawing will be available (hopefully each participant having a copy) to take back to households and aid further discussion within the community, for example with ‘friends of’ groups. The team is open to involvement of the community in the construction phase and are investigating appropriate ways to deliver this. All are welcome who want to engage from the immediate community, those who use the existing facilities and/or may use them in the future.
The project aims to ensure, as far as practicable, that the resulting play areas arising from the Playbuilder Project meet the needs of its users in the community and that there is a sense of community ownership for the completed play areas.
Currently, Playbuilder and the Council will be improving Poole Lane and the Fairways Estate play areas. The sites have been chosen as a result of existing surveys, consultation and identified need.
Children, young people, parents, members of the community and those who use the existing facilities and/or may use them in the future were invited to come and share their ideas and thoughts for the Poole Lane and Fairways Estate at a number of workshops in May 2009.
Recent workshops were held at Knyveton Gardens in March 2010.
