Local Company Awarded Pelhams Park Leisure Centre Project

Bournemouth Borough Council has awarded local company, Herbert H Drew & Son Ltd, the contract for alterations to the current swimming pools and changing rooms at the Pelhams Park Leisure Centre in North Bournemouth which will transform the Centre into a fully accessible public leisure facility by late 2010 offering a complete range of fitness activities to the community including swimming, a gym, over 70 weekly fitness classes and football.

Councillor Anne Filer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism said: “North Bournemouth has been promised a leisure facility for over 10 years and I am delighted that this long awaited aspiration is becoming a reality.”

Councillor Bob Chapman, the Council’s Cabinet Member for BIC/Pavilion and Project Board member added: “Herbert H Drew & Son Ltd provided the most competitive tender and we are pleased at being able to award the contract to a local company, which supports the local economy.” He is also passionate about encouraging local residents to take a look at the facilities as they are still open on a ‘pay and play’ or membership basis: “The class programme at Pelhams Park Leisure Centre is excellent and the gym is one of the best equipped in the area with great views over the fields towards the River Stour – I urge anyone who hasn’t yet been to pay a visit.”

Paul Gillard, Contract Director for Herbert H Drew & Son Ltd said: “We are pleased to continue our long standing and mutually successful working relationship with Bournemouth Borough Council which has included construction works on many of their educational and public buildings, including the current Dance Centre scheme at Bournemouth Pavilion. This contract represents a genuine illustration of the local environment being improved through the efforts of the local skilled labour force which will simultaneously provide support to the local economy.”

The pools at Pelhams Park Leisure Centre are now closed so that preparatory work can be carried out prior to the works which are due to begin later this month. Alternative swimming facilities are available at the Council’s other leisure facilities namely Kinson Swimming Pool (located on South Kinson Drive), Stokewood Leisure Centre (located on Stokewood Road) and the Littledown Centre (located at Chaseside).
