About this Consultation

A public consultation took place between 11 May and 26 June 2009 to gain feedback on the proposal to open an Academy on the site of what is presently King's High School. The proposed Academy would be sponsored by Canford School and would open on 1st September 2010 following the closure of the existing school on 31st August 2010.

Kings High is proposed as the first Bournemouth school to benefit from a substantial rebuild under the Building Schools for the Future programme. The Academy programme was designed by the Government as a way of tackling underachievement in education. In Bournemouth and Poole, Academies are a fundamental part of the local Building Schools for the Future programme. Nationally, the programme will see almost every secondary school in the UK either rebuilt or refurbished.

A public meeting was held at Kings High School at 6.30pm on Tuesday 19 May 2009. This provided people with an opportunity to ask the Council and the sponsors of the proposed Academy – Canford School – questions about the plans and what it means for the school. There was also a chance for people to share their views on the programme.

The students at Kings High will also be consulted via the School Council.

Results

Statutory Notice issued to close Kings High School and replace it with an Academy.

Notice is given in accordance with section 15(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 that Bournemouth Borough Council, Town Hall, Bourne Avenue, Bournemouth BH2 6DY intends to discontinue Kings High School, Hadow Road, Bournemouth BH10 5AS on 31st August 2010.
