Investing in People

Improve the quality

Looks at ways to improve the quality of life for the people of Bournemouth, empowering people and bringing marginalized and excluded groups into mainstream society.

What is this theme about?

The key issues being considered are:

  • People are living longer and people are having children later in life therefore the age gap between generations is widening
  • More people live alone feeling isolated and cut off from their community
  • Bournemouth is below the regional and national average at GCSE
  • Over 8% of young people in the town are not in employment, education or training. This exceeds the regional average of 5.9%
  • Children and young people make less progress at school than nationally expected
  • People with disabilities and long term illness miss out on opportunities open to others
  • People should feel included in their communities
  • In 2006 only 28% of residents felt that they could influence local decisions
  • The quality of life varies enormously depending on where people live
  • Increase partnership working at a neighbourhood level to deliver better services and outcomes for everybody including older people, homeless and disabled
  • Art and culture is essential for vibrant communities and can enhance the quality of life
  • Locally there is a shortage of people with basic education levels to fill gap in existing occupations
