A revolutionary scheme to give Boscombe residents the opportunity of home-ownership has put forward plans to build 10 new houses and a bungalow.
As the partnership organisation Bournemouth 2026 sets up a Community Land Trust in a bid to reduce deprivation and improve parts of Boscombe, plans have been submitted for ‘Gladstone Mews’ - a development of new homes on a patch of land between Haviland Road and Gladstone Road. The move is part of the ‘Backing Boscombe’ drive to create more permanent communities, boost people’s economic prospects and encourage more neighbourhood pride. Tenants who buy through the scheme would own their homes, while the Trust would keep ownership of the land. Working in this way means house prices will be around half the price of similar properties in the area and ensures homes remain ‘affordable’ long after they’re sold on.
Debbie Clifton, Bournemouth 2026 Development Manager said: “A recent independent report into Central Boscombe found much of the rental housing to be low quality and overcrowded, with the majority of people choosing to leave the area as they climb the social ladder. We believe a Community Land Trust which provides attractive, functional and affordable housing would give people a better start in life and will provide a legacy, a stepping stone for low income residents throughout Boscombe and an incentive to stay. This will create a more permanent, stable community which takes pride in its neighbourhood. “Our architects have taken great care to design homes which compliment and are in keeping with their surroundings.”
The proposals, due for consideration by Planning Board in the coming weeks, include 10 two and three bedroom contemporary-style energy efficient homes and a wheelchair-accessible bungalow in a mews development with private gardens and parking and two communal gardens. If permission is granted it is hoped that building work will be get underway this year. Visit www.bournemouth.gov.uk/planning for further details.
