Arts & Crafts Bazaar

The first A & C Bazaar at the top of Sea Road, Boscombe was launched on the 3rd of Sept to an overwhelming response for more:

We are now planning a market to run throughout the entire length of the precinct with a focus on arts, crafts and world foods on a Sunday in April (date tbc).

What’s it all about?

We’re looking for creators of contemporary clothing, homewares, ceramics, toys, artwork, accessories, fine food and much more. ‘Advocating truth to materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms’. The bazaar offers a opportunity to meet makers in one location and buy unique contemporary craft directly from them. This introduces a visitor attraction element in the long term by which skills such as weaving, carpentry, pottery etc are actively demonstrated, developing as a tourist attraction area to compliment the visitors that the land train now bring up the hill to the Boscombe Shopping Centre.

We are also looking for local food producers and sellers of world food to offer that all unique experience. Can you demonstate innovative and creative cooking on site?

Here are some details about how to take part:

Market Type: Arts & Crafts Bazaar/ World food market

Date/ Time: April 2012 (exact date tbc)

Location: Boscombe Precinct

Equipment Reqired: Marquee/ cover and your choice of props or trestle table.

Documents required:

  • Copy of your public liability insurance
  • Completion of documents provided on confirmation of participation which include a signed copy of terms and conditions and a risk assessment.

Fees:

  • £25 per stall.

Can you help inform the Boscombe Surf Reef Business Economic Impact Study?

Bournemouth University are inviting all businesses within Boscombe to take part in a study that is measuring the impact of the Artificial Surf Reef on the economies of Boscombe and Bournemouth and the businesses located there. Bournemouth University has been commissioned by The Crown Estate to undertake the research.

What’s Involved?

There are two parts to the research. The first part asks businesses for their opinions on the surf reef and the effect it has had on their business. Businesses will also be asked to provide a list of their suppliers so that they too can be invited to take part in the research. The second part of the research asks businesses to complete an economic form starting from the financial year 2009/10. This will allow Bournemouth University to create an economic model to measure the reefs impact on the local economy. All information and opinions provided will be kept entirely confidential and businesses will never be identified individually.

Why take part?

This is an opportunity for businesses to have their say on the impact that the surf reef has had on them and the local area. In addition, the results of the study will help the Crown Estate understand the effectiveness of schemes such as the surf reef in assisting economic regeneration and help the local authorities in the planning and policy decision making by understanding the complex relationships that exist between the various sectors of the economy, not just those directly affected by tourist spending.

Get Involved!

We would really appreciate as many businesses getting involved in research as possible. If you would like to take part in the research or would like more information about this project then please contact Lisa Stuchberry, Research Manager, 01202 961372 or lstuchberry@bournemouth.ac.uk

Capturing The Moment: Boscombe Community Photography Project

An exciting new project is being launched in the Boscombe area by local young people which will get the whole community thinking about their local environment. It will capture perceptions of young people by then snapping images of what they like or dislike about their area. The young people will then go on to exhibit and discuss their work with the community via exhibitions all over Boscombe.

This is a sustainable partnership project between Kidz On Track and Bournemouth Council’s Youth Service and Boscombe Regeneration Partnership and part funded by Connecting Communities

Who's Involved?

Flash will be run by a steering group of local young people who will run workshops from the Boscombe Regeneration Partnership office on how to use cameras, photo editing, printing and mounting photographic work, in addition to putting on exhibitions in partnership with businesses in the local area.

What's The Aim?

This is an opportunity for Young people to engage further with the Boscombe community: to share their thoughts and opinions of their area through the medium of photography.  We want to get young people, businesses and residents working together to create images about how they feel about their community and form new relationships.

This is a great way to engage young people in the community, teaching them new skills and giving them a chance to express their opinions about the area in which they live"

- Helen McCann, Kidz on Track Project Worker

Carnarvon Crescent Gardens- Improvement Works

Proposals are currently being produced through a joint effort between Bournemouth Borough Council, Local Stakeholders and Bournemouth East SNT Dorset Police for the regeneration of the Boscombe Crescent public open space, in a drive to improve safety, quality and community use of the space. A key driver has been to address existing problems including a reputation for antisocial behaviour, and to improve the quality of experience for users of the site.

Bournemouth Borough Council has been encouraging discussions as to what locals want this space to be. Suggestions to date have included improving the site as a venue for events and artistic displays, providing a more attractive display of plants, improving access, reducing anti social behaviour, improving the perception of safety, and creating a space fitting to be the ‘Gateway to Boscombe’.

This has been discussed at meetings of a resident’s group for the area; the Boscombe Area Regeneration Group (BARG); and Boscombe Traders when the opportunity was given to put yourself forward for a Space-shaper event. Space shaper is a consultation tool that collects the views of many different groups of people. A half day workshop gave everyone a chance to think about their views on issues such as use, access, maintenance, environment, design and appearance and community, and discuss them in a controlled and constructive forum. This process helps those who use and manage the space to gain a better understanding of how it works for different people, and its strengths and weaknesses.

Send Us Your Comments

A first wave of consultation has been undertaken and the results used to inform initial decisions on a first phase of works. We are now asking for your views on the proposed design plan:

Please e-mail all comments to parks@bournemouth.gov.uk and head the e-mail ‘Boscombe Crescent’.

This plan can also be viewed at www.facebook.com/boscombe or at the Boscombe Regeneration Partnership office

Proposed Works

Following on from Parks’ site survey and analysis, and consultation feedback, the following works have been proposed as a ‘first phase’:

1.     Removing all existing knee rails, timber knee rails and timber fencing. None of this looks good, and has no functional value.

2.     New railings to control access and re-direct flow around the site. This is critical to the space in controlling its use, and for protecting new planting.

3.     New planting! This creates an immediate impact and a more beautiful and inspiring environment.

4.     Deep cleaning all bins.

5.     Replacing damaged lighting heads

6.     Re-edging borders, to get back the ‘Crescent shape’

7.     Improvements to turf, improving grass and filling holes.

8.     Removing the telephone boxes

9.     The removal of three low quality trees.

10.   Continuing to work with a community support group as a partnership body

11.   Continuing to develop events and activities, such as markets and areas for community gardening.

This should all be considered as the first phase to get the Crescent back on its feet and looking how we would like it to, and an opportunity for the local community to get involved. Once this phase has been completed, we can begin to think about future proposals and where we all go from here. Please note that some of the proposals listed above will be subject to planning permission.

A New Community Group

Anyone is welcome to join and help us form a group including those who live, work or use the Crescent.

We are hoping that the new design plans, coupled with a group that want to take ownership of the Crescent will lead to the area being much more inviting and used more.  The group will function as the community organisation representative of local businesses and residents.

Their role will be to investigate and report local community interest in the Crescent, as well as take an active role in organising community involvement with the Crescent. The group will also be a vital long term body in ensuring that there is a long term interest in the Crescent. Please contact us if you wish to take part.

The Latest

The Crescent project is still very much a reality: information on the project is available via the project manager.

In light of the discussions with a variety of different stakeholders, and the additional consultation undertaken, the next steps of the project are under review. The Crescent project funding is still secure.

Proposals in the scheme and to be executed by the group are for a community garden space, community notice and information point, and community arts projects and more community based events in the short term, as well as other longer term goals.

Boscombe Vintage Market

Now in the Royal Arcade!

The Boscombe Regeneration Partnership has introduced a high class vintage market with ‘a creative edge’ once a month.

Boscombe has an established mix of small creative businesses trading in antiques; art; and vintage clothing talent. The vintage market is helping to provide opportunities for small businesses, local artists, skilled crafts people and enterprising students, whilst increasing footfall in the area; and raising the profile of Boscombe as an arts and cultural hub of Bournemouth.

From the very first pilot event, the market was a roaring success for stall traders and visitors alike. This was down to the creative businesses, both local and from afar, creating a market that showcased some amazing pieces of art and crafts, clothes, jewellery, furniture and collectables, all selling in an extremely positive vibe.

The inspiration for such a market comes from those in London such as Camden and spitalfields and is strongly supported by the Boscombe Area Regeneration Group, BARG and benefits from sponsorship of local businesses.

Trader Sara Cheng, a BARG member, has worked closely with the Boscombe Project Officer on the project:

As one of the only events of its kind on the South Coast, it acts to inspire and attract local talent- it is a great opportunity for artists and local traders to showcase their wares. There is an obvious demand for this in Boscombe and its success now means that the market will take place every 1st Saturday of the month.

Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design is also supportive of this latest Boscombe initiative:

The Vintage at Goodwood Festival this summer proved that the concept of ‘vintage’ is truly cool and has come of age and that the joy of enjoying classic, timeless design, prolonging the life of clothing and being thrifty is spreading far and wide. It's a credit to Boscombe's increasing ‘cool’ that the town now hosts a Vintage Market.

So, good news for all things vintage and Boscombe!

Next events:

3rd March 2012, 10-4pm in the Royal Arcade, Boscombe.
